This time, we took the boys and just ventured up for the day. Back in January, Jeff and I purchased a membership to the Art Institute but unfortunately had not made it up to the city during the summer. Since the membership includes another adult and up to two children, we had a pretty cheap day ahead of us. Well, except for the parking, snacks, dinner at Lou Malnati's Pizza and the requisite Starbucks White Chocolate Mocha.
Joe and Will really liked the Art Institute and hung in there for three hours! Their favorites were Edward Hopper's Nighthawks and of course Grant Wood's American Gothic. They were less than impressed with the Modern Wing. Joe was very excited to see this one exhibit on film making, only to find out it was home movies from some avant-garde dudes from the 1970's.
Some surprises were the Chagall windows that had recently been refurbished and returned for viewing and the Arms & Armor exhibit...very cool!
Another favorite was an installation called "Public Notice" which consisted of a speech given at the Art Institute over 100 years ago and is now on LED panels attached to the Grand Staircase. It prompted quite an interesting discussion on the age old question, "What is Art?"
It wasn't quite Christmas yet in the big city but we did get to see the Windows at Marshall Fields...well, technically Macy's and some lights were up as well as the ice rink at Millennium Park, although it wasn't open yet. We still got to snap silly photos at "The Bean" and just enjoy hanging out in the big city.
